AI Breathes Life into Dead Languages

Plus: AI in Healthcare: Speeding Up Dementia Diagnosis, Nvidia Boosts AI Portfolio with Startup Focused on Optimizing Models

Welcome to this week's edition of The AI Breakdown.

Here’s the big three stories of the week:

  • AI Breathes Life into Dead Languages: 5,000-Year-Old Tablet Translated

  • AI in Healthcare: Speeding Up Dementia Diagnosis

  • Nvidia Boosts AI Portfolio with Startup Focused on Optimizing Models

New AI translates 5,000-year-old cuneiform tablets almost instantly. The AI was trained on a sample of cuneiform texts and can translate from transliterations of the original texts or directly from cuneiform symbols. Until now, a lot of the tablets archaeologists have found have not been translated. AI could unlock a massive amount of information about life, politics, and beliefs of the first civilizations.

Also, they have made the AI model available on GitHub. You know, if you have some cuneiform tablets lying around that you need to translate.

Researchers have developed an AI - CognoSpeak - that could speed up the diagnosis of dementia and Alzheimer's disease. The system uses a virtual character to engage patients in conversation, testing memory and conducting cognitive tests. The AI then analyzes language and speech patterns to look for signs of dementia and other memory disorders.

The tool could help reduce waiting times for diagnosis. It is currently in the research phase, with further testing planned across the UK.

Nvidia has acquired OmniML, an AI startup that developed software to shrink machine-learning models so they can run on devices rather than in the cloud. This acquisition could help Nvidia improve its AI chips for cars, industrial robots, and drones, and potentially aid in shrinking the AI software that powers chatbots so it can run on devices rather than in data centers.
