FTC Begins Deep-Dive Into OpenAI

Plus: The Unveiling of Claude 2, Musk on the Move: Launches xAI, and Companion AI

Welcome to this week's edition of The AI Breakdown.

Here’s the big three stories of the week:

  • FTC Begins Deep-Dive Into OpenAI

  • The Unveiling of Claude 2

  • Musk on the Move: Launches xAI

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is reportedly investigating OpenAI to determine if its AI model, ChatGPT, made "false, misleading, disparaging, or harmful" statements about individuals.

The investigation, still in its exploratory phase, is part of the FTC's broader effort to regulate the AI industry and ensure that companies are not making false claims about their AI technologies.

Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, recently testified before Congress about A.I., stating that he welcomed their help in figuring out how to safely regulate this technology.

I guess he's getting his wish.

Anthropic has announced the release of Claude 2, an improved model that offers longer responses, better performance, and can be accessed via API or through a new public-facing beta website, claude.ai.

The new model has enhanced capabilities in coding, math, and reasoning, with notable improvements including a score of 76.5% on the Bar exam’s multiple-choice section, above the 90th percentile on GRE reading and writing exams, and a 71.2% score on a Python coding test.

These are impressive improvements, but we're still pretty far from it taking over the world.

Musk has launched his artificial intelligence startup, xAI, with a team of engineers from major U.S. tech firms, aiming to build an alternative to ChatGPT.

Musk, who has previously expressed concerns about AI's potential for "civilizational destruction," plans to create a "maximally curious" AI that seeks to understand the nature of the universe, predicting that superintelligence will arrive in five or six years.

This is also on the eve of Meta releasing its Twitter clone and reportedly releasing their open-source large language model, LLaMA for commercial use.

It kind of feels like Elon is trying to not be left in the dust by Zuckerberg.

🛠️ The Best Open Source Tools

Another aspect of the AI ecosystem that doesn’t seem to get much mainstream press is the concept of AI companions. The user base for this type of implementation is enormous.
