The Software, Supercomputer, and the Skeptic

Meta, Google, and Y Combinator all making waves

This week a lot more well known companies are putting their names in the AI hat, despite the mainstream media's concerns about AI safety, which are being widely discussed in public.

Meta (formerly the Facebook company) has just released Segment Anything, a new AI application that can "cut out" any object in any image/video with a single click. This technology makes it easier for more people to create applications that need to identify objects in images and videos. My first thought was that this could increase the accuracy of identifying people, cars, and animals in home security camera systems.

Nvidia is a long-time leader in the computer chip industry, creating chips for vehicles, robotics, and gaming systems. Google is taking a run at them with their own chip to help them scale their AI systems faster. However, according to this article, they are still a little behind.

Y Combinator is a company that helps technology startup companies get off the ground quickly and has kickstarted many big tech companies like Airbnb and DoorDash. Their most recent class of startups consists of many AI companies. However, this article points out that none of these ideas are too groundbreaking. So, I think we still have some time before the AI overlords take all our jobs.
