Plus: AI-powered brain implants and a epic team-up between IBM and NASA
Welcome to this week's edition of The AI Breakdown. Things are set to change soon. I've encountered a minor hiccup: another AI newsletter exists with the same name. In the near future, I'll be renaming this newsletter. Rest assured, no other aspects of the content will change—I just wanted to give you a heads up.
If you have any name suggestions, please send them my way.
I hope you enjoy this edition.
Here are the top three stories of the week:
OpenAI pushes the boundaries of AI.
AI-powered brain implants assist in a man's recovery.
Major AI collaboration between IBM and NASA.
OpenAI has released several updates for ChatGPT, including the introduction of the ChatGPT app for Android, the rollout of custom instructions in beta, and an increase in message limits for GPT-4 users. They've also introduced suggested replies, and the ability to analyze data and generate insights across multiple files using the "Code Interpreter" feature.
Additionally, OpenAI recently filed a trademark for GPT-5 on July 18th. This suggests they're either actively working on it or will start soon. Maybe OpenAI has a Christmas surprise in store for us.
Researchers used AI-powered brain implants to help a paralyzed man regain movement and sensation. He can now move his arm and feel touch sensations.
The intersection of technology and neuroscience is advancing. With companies like Elon Musk’s Neuralink exploring similar technologies, this study highlights AI's potential in enhancing such medical breakthroughs.
IBM and NASA have collaborated to release a large geospatial foundation model on the open-source AI platform, Hugging Face, for climate data analysis. Their goal is to offer a more streamlined approach for researchers to interpret this valuable data.
The more scientists and researchers focusing on global challenges, the better. Collaborations like this underscore AI's potential in addressing significant global issues when leveraged correctly.
